Apicoltura Laterza is a company specializing in the sale of queen Bees Buckfast
Apicoltura Laterza is a company specializing in the sale of Buckfast queen bees. Historically, it was Father Adam, a monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Buckfast, located in Devon, county of the United Kingdom, who made this crossroads. It all began in 1915, when Father Adam became responsible for the apiary: the following year, in England, there was a strong death caused by the trachea mite (Acarapis woodi). British bees died, while the few surviving local hives were composed mainly of specimens of the Ligustic and Carnic races. It was then that Father Adam, in order to create a parasite-resistant hybrid, began to cross the Ligustica of the Piedmontese strain with the drones of the English bee. The first experiment, fruit of the crossing with the Cypriot bee, did not give positive results. Later, he tried to cross the Ligustic bee with the French queens. Then in the 1950s, the monk travelled to Europe and the Middle East in search of other breeds of bees. Among the most important crossbreeds are the one with the Apis Mellifera Cecropia (1952), the one among the queens of Anatolia with the drones of the hybrid occurred in the abbey of Buckfast. In 1987, the monk made crossbreeds with the Monticola bee and the Scutellata bee, two African breeds. Father Adam died in 1996 and his heirs began to talk about the purity of the "Buckfast breed": this hybrid is very prolific, it is strong in brood deposition, it has a plundering nature, but it is not particularly prone to swarm and collects a lot of honey.
BUCKFAST'S QUEEN BEES ARE AMONG THE MOST APPRECIATED AMONG BEEKEEPERS
Today Buckfast queen bees are very popular among beekeepers, as they have positive characteristics: except for the American variant, which is particularly aggressive, Buckfast bees are considered particularly docile and, for many characteristics, superior to the Italian ones. Apicoltura Laterza markets Buckfast queen bees in 1.5 kg packs of bees: all our specimens are free of disease, as stated in the health certificate, delivered to our customers. For shipping, we use cardboard containers, specially designed for long-lasting transport: the material is light, strong and stackable (3 layers). The presence of ventilation holes provides bees with the best air recirculation. For more information on Buckfast queen bee pre-orders, please contact us by email. We ship throughout Italy with guaranteed delivery within 24 hours (48 hours in the case of islands).
