Reinforce the swarms with bee nucs

What are bee cores and how are they used in beekeeping?

Bee cores are used in beekeeping to strengthen weakened swarms. When a hive becomes too weak to provide for its own needs, a beekeeper can take a group of bees from a given hive and then move them to the weaker swarm. The bees that are moved become the nucleus of the new hive.

During this process, beekeepers try to balance the strength of the swarms , making sure that all families have enough manpower to be productive and survive.

To reinforce the weaker swarms , beekeepers choose one or two frames on each side of the original hive and make sure that the queen bee stays with her workers. The remaining frames are then left to the original colony so that the family continues to store honey to provide food for the swarm.

It is advisable to place the hives at a distance of about 3km from each other in order to prevent the bees from returning to their original swarm.

bee cores are used in beekeeping for several purposes. Beekeepers can use the bee core to strengthen weakened swarms, to create new colonies or to populate a hive.

When beekeepers want to increase the number of components in their swarms, they buy bee cores from third parties.

Why do beekeepers buy bee cores for breeding?

As we said, beekeepers very often use the splitting method to strengthen a family. At this stage, the breeders divide one of the apiary swarms in half to try to create a second hive .

When a beekeeper does not have enough bees to carry out this procedure, he proceeds with the purchase of nuclei for breeding.

Bee cores consist of a fairly large group of worker bees , the brood and the queen bee and are a great way to populate a colony.

It has been shown that the use of bee nuclei in beekeeping is able to optimize the genetic heritage of the swarms which (with the arrival of new individuals) tend to carry out a better profile for the conservation of the species.

Buying bee cores is the easiest way to increase the strength of your apiary, especially in the case of inexperienced beekeepers. The production of bee cores is a very special process. The swarms selected for the production of nuclei must be carefully followed and monitored throughout the autumn season and especially during the swarming period.

Composition of a bee core

The word core in beekeeping refers to a colony of bees made up of the queen, the brood and the workers. In some cases, a core may also include drones.

Usually the most common format for the sale of bee cores is on 5 frames:

  • 3 frames of at least 70% capped brood;
  • 2 frames with honey supplies.

Anti-varroa treatment for swarms

When inserting new components inside the colony it is important to ensure that the health of the new bees is optimal. Otherwise, diseases and parasites would spread very quickly within the apiary.

We recommend that you rely on trusted producers who are able to certify the health of their bees. Choose Apicoltura Laterza!
