SWARM BEES: WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW THEY ARE PRODUCED

The nuclei of bees are ensembles of bees created by the union of several groups to reinforce a swarm.

Usually after the swarm (the queen leaving the hive), a group of bees leave the swarm to follow the old queen bee. Through this phenomenon the number of components of a swarm decreases sharply, the swarm weakens and becomes less productive.

What are bee cores for

The nuclei are used in beekeeping very often for the production of new colonies. Inserting nuclei inside their apiaries allows beekeepers to make their swarms more numerous, stronger and consequently more productive.

In terms of advantages, the formation of new nuclei certainly creates benefits to the swarm, but it is always good to remember that it is a procedure managed by human intervention and not by the natural course of the biological mechanisms of bees.

Among the advantages to be given importance, there is one in particular: The improvement of the genetic heritage.

Exactly! An ever stronger swarm is able to transfer information to future generations according to a system of recalibration for survival. What does this all mean?

What we want to explain is that with a healthier and stronger swarm, a succession of behaviors and more and more efficient mechanisms are created that allow bees to survive more easily but also to develop greater physical resistance.

Through the creation of nuclei, the bee families are strengthened and a general strengthening of the species is countered. The stronger a swarm, the greater and better the quantity and quality of honey produced.

Beware of distances

In this process, or in the formation of new colonies, there are also factors to be taken into account. Not being a natural process, one should be careful to predict any unexpected behavior of bees.

In some cases, in fact, when a group of bees is taken from a main swarm and then merged with another group, it can happen that part of the bees feel the need to go back to their origins. These are natural instincts of bees that cannot always be controlled.

To avoid this situation it would be enough to apply some tricks. Returning to the mother swarm can be avoided by simply moving the new swarm away from the main swarm for at least 2 or 3 kilometers.

In the event that the distance between the two cores is reduced, there could be an excessive reduction of the newly created core as many bees would abandon the current swarm to go back. If this were to happen, the new nucleus would face such a weakening that it could not survive for long.

How they are formed and arranged

We have explained that the nuclei of bees are nothing more than groups of bees coming from different swarms and unified with each other for the formation of new colonies that are more numerous, stronger and more productive.

Usually the cores are placed on specific wooden frames which are obviously included when you decide to buy a core.

Obviously, as we all know, a colony is effectively formed when there is a queen bee inside. As we have highlighted several times, the presence of a queen in a swarm is the priority element that determines the survival of the entire hive.

Without the presence of a queen, the swarm wouldn't have a chance to survive over time. Recall that the queen bee is; the only one able to be fertile and therefore to be able to lay eggs.

In this regard it will be useful to know that you can buy queen bees directly online on the site www.apicolturaterza.it

Apicoltura Laterza deals with the production and sale of Buckfast queen bees and Ligustiche queen bees both virgin and fertile.

The composition of a nucleus is therefore organized as follows:

  • Queen bee of the same year of production of the core;
  • three honeycombs with brood of different ages
  • two honeycombs with food reserves

Honeycombs are the cells built by bees themselves to store food reserves such as honey and pollen.

When to buy bee cores

Usually the cores are sold in the spring period but that; it also depends on the climatic conditions of the area.

With Apicoltura Laterza it is possible to buy cores directly online by selecting the reception period with the possibility of booking your bees in advance for a better organization of your business.

Apicoltura Laterza ships nuclei and packs of bees throughout Italy and throughout Europe.

The packages are delivered with a special drawer, where the presence of the wire mesh facilitates the transport of bees in long transports. We have refrigerated and professional trucks used for the transport of bees. With adequate ventilation, the cores are transported in full comfort without suffering any damage and arrive at their destination in full force. You will receive together with your order a health certificate attesting the state of health.

Apicoltura Laterza only sells selected and healthy bees. To buy cores, just visit the appropriate section on the site www.apicolturalaterza.it
